*UPDATE: Patrick won silver after the free program!* In the past few days I have been blogging Finlandia Trophy-related photos, news, and whatever else could be found about Patrick. I recapped mostly in reverse chronological order, with the newest items at the top. It’s been a blast getting up in the very early hours of the morning to live blog for the first time. Now I can’t believe that it’s over!

Patrick seemed pleased, and the camaraderie between him and Nathan continued on the podium. Maxim made him laugh as well. I enjoyed watching the two young girls in the audience who were thrilled that Patrick bowed in front of them.

Free Program Competition
Patrick skated a lovely free program to Eric Radford’s music, “A Journey”! Not perfect, but good enough to make the podium in second place. Thank goodness YouTube will not be muting videos of his FS:
Afterwards he told coach Marina, “Better than yesterday.”
I had to watch it twice, but I don’t think he did that badly. He missed the first triple toe in his 4T3T combo, and that quad toe landing looked a bit off. He fell on a second 4T in the second half, did a good triple axel-double toe combination, put a hand down on his triple lutz, and then watered down his triple flip combo into a double flip combo. The ending was lovely, and by then I was starting to get into that journey of memories of his friendship with Eric.
Here are the judges’ scores: (link)
I agree with those who say that this program is breathtaking – it is a work of art. I think Eric Radford’s wonderful composition suited Patrick so well, and I loved his melodies. Personally, to me the music seemed a bit heavy in places (it could include some lighter moments). My issue here is not with the composition itself but with the cello and strings overpowering the piano melody in the second half of the program. In either case, at the very end of the performance, Patrick drew me into a feeling of nostalgia, and in the future I want him to evoke this feeling earlier in the program if he can. I think the theme of the program includes friendship, nostalgia, good memories of skating in years gone by, etc. While Patrick is doing this program, if he can keep all thought of scoring and rank out of his mind and just concentrate on the music and memories, it will be a success. Otherwise, the theme and central message of his program will not be communicated effectively.
What Patrick said about his free skate:
@Pchiddy was happy with the results here in Finland but says he can do better. Never been this ready going to Skate Canada #FinTrophy16

October 8, 2016: Short Program Competition
Patrick was in third place after his short program. He didn’t quite get the jumps perfect, and it sounds like there will be adjustments made, but at least he smiled! Also, I didn’t notice until I re-watched his SP that due to missing the 3T that was supposed to be a part of his opening 4T3T combo, he added it at the end as his last jump and turned the 3Lz into a 3Lz3T combo! Glad that worked!! I hope he is okay after that nosebleed. He seemed in good spirits afterwards (see above).
Short Program Video from Dailymotion:
In an interview afterwards (see below) he said, “I love what I do, and I want the audience to feel the same thing.” He also said that this is the time to experiment, that the Finnish audience has been very supportive and the ice felt good.

Patrick had a full day with practice, interviews, and meeting fans!
I was so glad to see this photo of Patrick hugging his coach, since she apparently has a reputation for being “tough”. As I said in my previous post about finding a coach, love and appreciation are crucial, so I am very happy to see a sign of that here!

According to the above IceNetwork article, Patrick has landed his quad Salchow 3 out of 5 attempts in practice so far, and will be working toward 4 out of 5 attempts in time for Skate Canada International.
“In practice, I can maybe land three out of five attempts,” Chan said. “My goal is to be landing four out of five by Skate Canada and be able to put it in the program.”

After arriving at the Espoo Metro Areena, Patrick sat with his friends in the stands.

Fan Yuki reported that Patrick chatted happily with Nathan Chen. Hmmm… maybe they are related? After all, they both have the same Chinese last name… In either case, it’s great to see Patrick hanging with new friends (and competitors)! More photos:
