Patrick Chan 2016 Cup of China: Days 1 and 2

Patrick Chan after his short program at Cup of China, November 18, 2016
Last updated: Tuesday, February 14, 2017

Cup of China (CoC) has concluded, and I collected everything I could about Patrick’s first two days of competition here! (For info on his free skate, see my post here.) Right now Patrick sits in third after the short program (judges’ scores). I don’t know how long it will be ummuted, but here is the YouTube video:

As usual, “Blackbird” is a beautiful program, and Patrick’s skating and presentation skills were superb as always. He did make some mistakes, including putting his hand down at the end of his quad toe-triple toe combination and stepping out of his triple axel. No falls on this one, but he doubled his triple lutz. I attribute all this to a combination of nerves and jet lag. I believe if Patrick can truly have fun out there, he’ll be all right.

Patrick’s Comments After the Short Program

According to this article, Patrick praised Jin Boyang and the younger generation of skaters for ushering in the “quad era”, but he said he plans on using his strengths as well.

Patrick admitted that the Skate Canada competition three weeks ago already took up a lot of his energy, so his main focus at Cup of China is his health, and not the points.

Patrick also told IFS Magazine that he considered himself lucky to be in third place after the short program (article).

Han Yan’s Admiration for Patrick

Han Yan is a big admirer of Patrick, and I’m sure he was delighted for Patrick to be in China. See this article about him hugging Patrick. Before the competition, Han posted on Weibo:

互相保佑,一起加油

Which roughly means, “bless each other, and cheer each other on”!
